Indonesia Encourages QRIS Payment Cooperation in ASEAN: A Long Leap in Economic Integration in Asia

Legacy Lead of ASEAN QR Code Pandu Patria Sjahrir attended the second day of the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit 2023. He also encouraged cooperation in payments using the QRIS system in ASEAN member countries.

“This effort represents a significant leap forward in our commitment to cooperation in ASEAN economic integration,” he said at the Sultan Hotel, Central Jakarta on Monday, September 4, 2023.

According to him, the implementation of QRIS among ASEAN countries is the foundation towards a prosperous Asia . He also assessed that this payment system cooperation would also encourage economic growth in ASEAN member countries.

Pandu said that so far cooperation in QRIS payments has taken place in six ASEAN countries. These include Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore. All central banks, he said, have joined forces to use a national border payment system that is faster, more cost-effective, transparent and inclusive.

The QRIS collaboration between Indonesia and Thailand was launched on August 17 2021. According to him, the implementation of QRIS in Thailand has been successful since then. Then the QRIS collaboration with Malaysia and Singapore was launched this year.

Malaysia has implemented QRIS from Indonesia since May 8 2023. Furthermore, Indonesia and Singapore started a pilot project or trial of the QRIS payment system on August 17 2023. The implementation of the digital payment system targets micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). As well as encouraging tourism growth.

Previously, Bank Indonesia and the Bank of Thailand first inaugurated the implementation of QRIS between countries on August 29 2022. This collaboration began with a trial phase on August 17 2021.

With the integration of payments through QRIS, transactions between countries no longer need to convert or exchange currencies again when shopping in the countries they visit. So, transactions can be done simply by scanning the QR code.

As a result, payments for transactions made by foreign tourists in Indonesia can be made by scanning the QRIS of Indonesian merchants using their country’s payment application. Likewise, payments for Indonesian tourist transactions can be made by scanning the standard QR of the country they are visiting, using the Indonesian payment application.
