A Woman’s Leg is Amputated as a Result of Being Trapped by a Travelator at Bangkok Airport

The leg of a woman who was caught in the travelator at Don Mueang Airport, Bangkok, had to be amputated by the rescue team.

The woman’s son said the family was “shocked” and worried about his mother’s mental health after the operation was performed on Thursday night (29/06).

The 57-year-old woman caught her foot on Thursday (29/06) morning after tripping over her suitcase while walking to board a plane, local media said.

“My mother’s state of self-confidence is quite apprehensive,” her son wrote on Facebook.

“We got to talk to him before and after the surgery… Although he shows his strength through facial expressions and tone of voice, we know deep down he is devastated because he suddenly lost his leg,” added Kit Kittirattana.

“Our family knows full well that we can’t get her legs to function the way they were before, nor can we get her life back to normal,” he wrote.

Images circulating online show the woman – who has not been named at the time – in a sitting position with her left leg wedged under the travelator.

The pink suitcase next to it had lost two of its wheels, while the yellow plates normally found on the end of the travelator had also fallen off.

Airport management said they were “deeply concerned” by the incident and would compensate the woman for the loss of her left leg. The airport will also bear the medical expenses.

The airport director, Karant Thanakuljeerapat, told reporters on Thursday (29/06) that the cause of the incident was being investigated.

He added that the airport had planned to replace some of the old travelators in 2025. But due to this incident, the process might be accelerated.

Local media reported that the travelator in question had been operating since 1996.
