Tajik, Iranian parliament speakers discuss cooperation issues

Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) Rustam Emomali, who is also the Mayor of Dushanbe, on January 8 met in Tehran with  Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.   

The Majlisi Milli press center says the parties discussed a broad range of issues related to the bilateral collaboration between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.  relations   

In the course of the talks, they reportedly noted with satisfaction that negotiations of the highest level between Tajikistan and Iran plays a constructive role in expanding the bilateral cooperation.   

Rustam Emomali and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf noted an important role of parliaments of the two countries in expansion of the bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran and expressed their interest in further expansion of the bilateral collaboration between their countries.  

The Majlisi Milli press center notes that the legal foundation of Tajikistan and Iran includes 200 cooperation documents.

In this context, the parties reportedly noted the fruitful activities of the Tajik-Iranian joint commission for trade, economic, technical and cultural cooperation.    

Noting the great opportunities of Tajikistan and Iran, the parties expressed their interest in interesting in increasing the bilateral cooperation between their countries to 500 million US dollars. 

Recall, Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, speaking at a joint meeting of high-ranking delegations of Iran and Tajikistan in Dushanbe, said on November 8, 2023 that an initial target for reaching a US$500 million trade with Tajikistan is possible.

Rustam Emomali and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reportedly outlined sectors like industry, mining, energy, transportation, agriculture, and tourism as areas that could drive the bilateral trade between the two countries.   

At the end of the meeting, Rustam Emomali invited Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to pay an official visit to Tajikistan at any time convenient for him.  Iranian parliament speaker accepted the invitation with pleasure.

According to data of the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Iran over the first nine months of this year has valued at has valued at US$175.1922 million, which is 11.4 percent more than in the same period last year.  This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Iran estimated at US$63.0261 million and Tajikistan’s imports from Iran US$112.1661 million.
