Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will kick off the ASEAN Summit today, Tuesday, 5 September 2023, in Jakarta. Long-term strengthening of the bloc and efforts to resolve internal crises such as Myanmar will be discussed at this meeting.

Today’s conference will be held in two sessions. First in plenary format and second in retreat form. The opening will be carried out by Indonesian President Jokowi as the chairman of ASEAN this year.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in his speech at the ASEAN Summit, Tuesday, September 5, 2023, alluded to the new map released by China, as well as emphasized Kuala Lumpur’s position on this matter. According to Anwar, problems in the South China Sea must be handled in a peaceful and rational manner through dialogue.

Anwar also assessed the need for consultations in accordance with universally recognized principles of international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS 1982. Previously, China last week released the “2023 Edition Standard Map of China,” which is famous for its U shape. The map covers around 90 percent of the South China Sea.

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi stated that ASEAN must have the courage to evaluate itself, be open and united in finding a solution to the Myanmar crisis , which has shackled the bloc since the military coup in that country two years ago.

“We need more tactical and extraordinary efforts to implement 5PC,” said Jokowi when opening the ASEAN Summit retreat session in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 5 2023, referring to the five-point consensus for Myanmar agreed upon by Southeast Asian leaders.
